The medical apparatus and dental implant industries are experiencing a significant shift. As the demand for patient-specific, high-reliability components grows, CNC machining has become the backbone of production. From titanium alloy implants to PEEK removable partial dentures (RPD), subtractive manufacturing offers the precision and surface integrity required for critical applications.

However, the path to perfection is fraught with challenges. Machining difficult materials such as titanium alloys (like TC4), PEEK (polyether ether ketone), and ceramics presents significant hurdles. These materials are notorious for their poor thermal conductivity, high abrasiveness, and tendency to cause workpiece deformation. Traditional cutting methods often struggle with high cutting forces, rapid tool wear, and the risk of micro-cracks, especially in the intricate geometries required for medical implants.

To meet these demands, the industry is increasingly turning to hybrid machining solutions. Ultrasonic-assisted machining is emerging not just as an alternative, but as a necessary evolution. By applying high-frequency micro-vibrations to the cutting tool, it reduces cutting forces, improves chip evacuation, and minimizes the risk of edge chipping on brittle materials. This technology is quickly becoming the standard for achieving the high surface quality and tight tolerances the medical field requires.

Introducing the Conprofe TW-100: Compact 5-Axis Precision

Our Conprofe Lightweight Vertical 5-Axis Machining Center (TW-100) is engineered specifically for the rigors of precision medical component manufacturing.

Despite its compact footprint, the TW-100 is built on a robust industrial grey cast iron bed. This provides the high rigidity, vibration damping, and thermal stability typically found in much larger machines—all while weighing just 1,000 kg. Its small size allows for easy integration into clean-room environments or crowded production floors without sacrificing performance.

Standard Configuration and Material Capabilities

The TW-100 comes ready for high-speed precision out of the box. Its standard configuration includes:

  • A high-speed direct-clamping spindle with a maximum speed of 40,000 rpm

  • A horizontal carousel tool magazine with a capacity of up to 40 tools

  • A timed and metered lubrication system for extended machine life

  • A multi-stage filtration cooling system to ensure surface finish quality

  • A Metrol tool setter for precise tool length measurement and breakage detection

……

This configuration allows the TW-100 to excel in machining the most demanding medical materials, including titanium alloy square and disc-shaped blanks, as well as PEEK for implant RPDs.

Proven Performance: Medical Machining Case Studies

The true measure of a machine is in the parts it produces. The TW-100 has demonstrated exceptional results in key dental applications:

  • Titanium TC4 Malo Bridge: We achieve high-precision machining with seamless gingival adaptation and burr-free holes for the abutment screws. Large-angle cutting is performed efficiently, with a total cycle time of just 126 minutes.

  • Metal or PEEK Removable Partial Dentures (RPD): By significantly reducing cutting forces, the TW-100 effectively prevents workpiece deformation. The resulting dentures show a fit surface with no visible gap and an exceptional surface roughness of just Ra 0.4μm.
